The small portrait of Robert Burns by Alexander Nasmyth which hangs in the newly renovated Scottish National Portrait Gallery has become overly familiar as a trademark for a kitsch brand of Scottishness which is demeaning to the poet’s legacy. It’s with respect to Burns and Nasmyth that I make my modest reworking to mark the 25th of January.

My portrait can be seen along with other pictorial responses to Burns at The McGill Duncan Gallery, Castle Douglas, from Saturday, January 28th, 2011.

I was able to give ‘Here’s Looking at Euclid’ its first public airing at the Spring Fling last month, and I was pleased to see that it drew interest from a wide range of viewers. One young chap quietly devoted an hour to sketching all fifteen panels into his sketchbook – a real compliment! His mum kindly scanned me the result…

For anyone who’s clicked on this blog for info about forthcoming shows, sorry to have failed to give forewarning about my showing at the Spring Fling in Dumfries. It came and went at the end of May, and I was so focussed on producing and framing new work that I neglected to promote it. I find it’s not until I have the work properly displayed that I feel like letting anyone know about it, by which time it’s too late!

Anyway, here’s a retrospective taste…

I’ve since rehung a good smattering of work at home, here in Portobello, so get in touch and come by for a coffee and a browse!
